This is a country that stays with you long after you leave, calling you back with its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and iconic sights. Its past is so deep and fascinating that you could spend months uncovering its stories. From rolling heather-covered hills and majestic castles to serene lochs and dramatic coastlines, every view feels like a scene from a storybook—so stunning, you’ll find yourself wondering if it’s even real.
Our Love Affair with Scotland
Melissa and I have been captivated by Scotland, visiting seven times in the last eight years—two of those trips coinciding with our son’s studies at The University of Edinburgh. With each visit, our appreciation deepens for this breathtaking country, filled with rich history, stunning landscapes, and some of the warmest people you’ll ever meet.
We’ve had the privilege of staying in some truly iconic castles, hotels, and estates, but a few stand out as unforgettable experiences:
Borthwick Castle: A Stay Steeped in History
One of our most remarkable stays was at Borthwick Castle, a fortress where history echoes through its 14-foot-thick stone walls. Once home to Mary, Queen of Scots, this medieval stronghold even is said to have safeguarded all of Scotland’s gold at one point.
The atmosphere is unmatched—from its grand halls to the breathtaking rooftop views, where we listened to tales of prisoners, sieges, and battles fought long ago. There is still damage to the outside wall from Cromwell's cannonball, showing how strong a defense this castle had. The staff made us feel like royalty, treating us as if we were part of the castle’s own storied lineage.
The Witchery: A Spellbinding Experience
For a stay dripping in mystique and opulence, nothing compares to The Witchery—an iconic hotel and restaurant at the foot of Edinburgh Castle on the Royal Mile.
The rooms are nothing short of a historical masterpiece, adorned with deep reds, rich tapestries, and antique furnishings. And the food? Absolutely worth the splurge. Every moment felt like stepping back in time, wrapped in the magic of Edinburgh’s past.
Exploring Scotland with a Personal Guide
On two of our visits, we hired a private driver—Dave, an absolute treasure trove of Scottish history and local legends.
If you’re an Outlander fan, you’d appreciate that Dave took us to hidden filming locations most tourists never see. One of the most fascinating stories he shared was about The Duke of Argyll, who collected seeds from around the world and had them shot out of cannons across his estate—creating a one-of-a-kind international forest in Scotland.
The Magic of Scotland
From cascading waterfalls and misty lochs to rolling green hills and fairytale castles, every corner of Scotland feels like stepping into a storybook.
And the pubs? Let’s just say we have plenty of recommendations for you, LOL. 🍻 Click here for our top Scotland travel tips and must-visit spots!
The History of the Battlefield of Culloden
Walking the hallowed grounds of Culloden, where the bravest Highlanders fought for their independence, is an experience that stays with you.
You can feel the history. One of the bloodiest battles in Scotland’s past, Culloden is home to mass graves for each clan, a sight that evokes both deep sadness and immense pride—pride for the unbreakable spirit of the Highlanders, who endured not just the battle, but the grueling march to get there. It’s truly one of the most moving and historic sites in Scotland.
The Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle
This is one of the most exhilarating and awe-inspiring events to experience when visiting Scotland in August. For three magical weeks, military bands, cultural dancers, and performers from around the world gather to put on an unforgettable show against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
Every night is sold out—and for good reason. The music, the precision, and the sheer spectacle make this a MUST-SEE event for anyone visiting Scotland.
If Scotland is calling your name, we have endless recommendations—whether it’s:🏰 Walking the historic streets of Edinburgh⛳ Playing a round at St. Andrews (the birthplace of golf)🌊 Exploring the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye🎭 Taking in the charm of Glasgow and Inverness
The Islands of Staffa and Mull
These two islands are absolutely breathtaking! On our boat ride to Staffa, we were lucky enough to see dolphins leaping alongside us—it was truly magical. As we approached, we marveled at Fingal’s Cave, a natural wonder with towering basalt columns. But the real highlight? Puffins! We sat right on the cliff’s edge and watched in awe as hundreds of these charming little birds landed, took off, and fed—some were within just 10 feet of us! It was an unforgettable experience.
The Isle of Mull welcomed us with its picturesque harbor, vibrant waterfront, and charming shops. The walking paths offered stunning views, while the local cafés and restaurants served up delicious food. With its breathtaking landscapes and warm, inviting atmosphere, Mull was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
This country will capture your heart, just as it has captured ours. ❤️🏴
